A novel manufacturing process of pure chlorine dioxide (ClO2) was developed. A number of U.S. patents (listed below) and an extensive list of foreign national patents have been received for this process technology and its products. Dr. Lee is the inventor of the process chemistry and manufacturing method, with sole and full sponsorship of Worrell Water Technologies over a dozen years.
- A Novel Chlorine Dioxide Manufacturing Process – Chemistry and Process,” U.S. Patent No. 5,855,861, 1999.
- A Novel Chlorine Dioxide Manufacturing Process – Product Delivery and Treatment System,” U.S. Patent 6,051,135, 2000.
- Chlorine dioxide gel and associated methods,” U.S. Patent No. 7,229,647, Issued June 12, 2007.
- Chlorine dioxide gel and associated methods,” U.S. Patent No. 8,088,417, Issued January 3, 2012.
- Chlorine dioxide gel and associated methods,” U.S. Patent No. 8,202,546, Issued June 19, 2012.
The technology has secured worldwide protection. The patents and associated knowhows have been assigned to Worrell Water Technologies LLC. The new process impactfully differs from the conventional technology, in the areas of:
- no free available chlorine (FAC) involvement
- absence of strong acid in manufacturing
- ultra-pure product capability (absence of chloride, chlorite, or chlorate ions)
- does not generate any trihalomethanes (THM’s) or THM precursors during treatment
- no disinfection byproducts (DBP’s) problem
- options for producing a longer shelf-life product via specially formulated chlorine dioxide gel
Unlike other ClO2 processes, this process involves neither strong acid nor chlorine in any phase of its manufacturing. The process uses environmentally friendly, mild acids for generating ClO2 from sodium chlorite. This highly efficient process can produce a highly concentrated ClO2 aqueous solution, 25,000 mg/L or higher, and the product solution is pure ClO2 aqueous solution not containing any byproduct or unconverted reactant. Even higher concentrations are possible with recent advances. This allows for convenient use and safe storage of chlorine dioxide in an unique manner. The process can be used as an on-site generation process for both drinking water and wastewater treatment. A ClO2 generator based on this technology was used at Cape Hatteras, NC for drinking water treatment. A newer advanced system was used at Sandy Hook National Park, NJ for wastewater treatment. A small-scale on-site generator was also used at the El Monte resort, Taos, NM, for its swimming pool disinfection. This process is the only one approved by NSF International, for chlorine dioxide manufacture in the world by receiving/achieving both NSF-60 and NSF-61 certifications.
